Who Am I ?

My name is Christa-Lynn Flowers, and I live in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. I am a mother of four beautiful children whom I am very proud of. I have worked with the Canadian Cadet organization for fourteen years training cadets. During my time as a cadet officer, I have witnessed and experienced the importance of positive mentorship, safety, and the need for good role models. I learned that to lead our children and youth into the future you need to lead by example. The relationships with cadets that I made during my time with the program is what has influenced my desire to become a teacher. One of my favorite things about the program was watching the beginner cadet advance in ranks as they grow within the program. The changes I saw as they grew up, and became incredible leaders, friends, and even employees were beyond imaginable. Building mutually respectful relationships with each cadet was a very important part of watching them grow. The relationship you gain with each cadet is individually formed and is based on the personality of the cadet and their families. You are just one of many people in their community. However, you are an important part of their success. I am proud to have been a part of this program, and I am thankful for all it has taught me and helped me grow.

During my time with cadets, I completed my Bachelor of Arts, with a major in Anthropology and First Nations Studies. With this degree I worked as a field archeologist for seven years. I often gave presentations in my children’s schools and loved engaging with the students. I found a joy in educating young minds and engaging them with visual and physical ways of learning. My personal interests include being outdoors, where I enjoy hiking, camping, hunting, and skiing. I love spending time with my family doing these activities. I enjoy learning about vegetation and traditional uses of plants. I am passionate about First Nations pre-contact history, land uses, land practices and material culture pre-contact. I hope to be able to share my knowledge with students and engage them in learning with my passions.
