Design For Learning

Design for Learning is a student-centred approach to teaching that intentionally plans for diversity, inclusion, and success from the start. Rather than retrofitting lessons to meet learner needs, Design for Learning proactively removes barriers and creates flexible pathways so all students can engage meaningfully with learning.

Grounded in Alberta Programs of Study, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), trauma-informed practice, and Indigenous ways of knowing, Design for Learning recognizes that students bring diverse strengths, identities, experiences, and ways of understanding into the classroom.

This framework supports educators in designing learning experiences that are:

  • Inclusive and equitable

  • Responsive to student voice and choice

  • Flexible across learning contexts

  • Grounded in community and citizenship
